Question Seasonic m12ii 520W, Cooler Master GX 750W, or Thermaltake Toughpower 650W with QFan PSU for RTX 2080

Hi guys,

I have a 6 year old system (i7-8700K, 1050 Ti, 2 3.5" HDDs) that uses a Seasonic m12ii 520W. I'm getting a RTX 2080 and I'm wondering if the PSU would work. Won't be gaming, might be running a bit of stable diffusion here and there, so not a heavy workload. If it's not enough, I'm also getting a Cooler Master GX 750W or Thermaltake Toughpower 650W with QFan, would either of those work?

These are my only 3 options. Thoughts?

Take your build info and put it into PCPartPicker.com and see what kind of power it wants. Personally I always build though with 850W units from EVGA regardless of what's going inside the case. Some cards max out at 200W while others are up to 600W while a 2080 isn't that extreme it's also not the most efficient in terms of power consumption.

If you click the power estimate it tells you what consumed what and the range. Since PSUs are relatively cheap get more than you need now for future upgrades as they tend to last a decade or longer.

I would certainly think those numbers are maximum wattage...not idle draw. HOWEVER, 478 watts is way more than I'd be comfortable powering with anything less than 650 watts...or preferably 750 watts.

just for shits and giggles, I plugged my current build into pcpartpicker...it comes up at 585 watts...yet the Kill-a-watt it's plugged into has never shown more than 400 watts coming from the wall.

FWIW, none of the PSUs you listed would be my first choice...Corsair, Seasonic, or SuperFlower are (generally) all far superior...and much more reliable.

Thanks. Yup they're not my first choice either, but these are free items (including the 2080), so beggars can't be choosers. Not looking for something that's optimal, just looking for something that would work without blowing apart for a few years

That sucks. Mine is still going strong. Anyway I went for the CM GX 750 in the end as the TT was missing some modular cables that I needed. One of the hazards of getting a 2nd hand modular PSU.
